First, it looks at how the population is ageing, presenting challenges for a number of policy areas relating to older people. Then it examines the main determinants of population change: fertility, mortality and migration. Finally, the chapter discusses the uncertainty surrounding population projections.

01-Mar-2013Estimates of the Very Old (including centenarians) for England and Wales provide annual mid year estimates by sex and single year of age for persons aged 90 to 104 and for the 105 and over age-group for England and Wales as a whole. Estimates for 2002 to 2010 take into account the revisions made to the mid-year population estimates (MYE) for 2002 to 2010, following the 2011 Census. These estimates were previously known as Estimates of the Very Elderly (including centenarians).

30-Oct-2012These data tables underlie the ‘Ageing in the UK’ interactive mapping tool. Using the tool helps bring these data alive, allowing you to analyse the age structure of the population at the local area level more easily. You can see how the population has aged over time and is projected to continue to age by selecting from a list of indicators of population ageing, such as median age, and animating the map. It is also possible to export jpegs of the maps you produce.
