Population Estimates

2011 Census statistics provide a rich source of information about the number, distribution and characteristics of the population in England and Wales as at census day (27 March 2011). The statistics included in this release provide the first detailed cross tabulations of two or more topics from the census that add to the detail already provided in earlier releases.

The Detailed Characteristics tables included in this release are available to download from the Nomis website. This link file contains direct links to a page on the Nomis website for each table. Additional information is included that describes the geography level provided in each table, and an indicator of which tables are discussed in the statistical bulletin that is included in this release.

This bulletin presents the main messages from the publication of the 2011 mid-year population estimates for Primary Care Organisations (PCOs) in England. It also describes changes that have taken place since 2001 and the age distribution of the population within these areas.

This product is part of the set of Small Area Population Estimates (SAPE). It includes estimates of the usually resident population as at 30 June of the reference year for Lower Layer and Middle Layer Super Output Areas (SOAs) in England and Wales by age and sex. These estimates are consistent with the Census based local authority, regional and national population estimates. Estimates reflect the new SOA boundaries introduced for the publication of 2011 Census results.

SOAs are geographies which were introduced in 2004 to improve the reporting of small area statistics. They are built from groups of 2011 Census Output Areas and are of consistent size and fixed boundaries. SOA population estimates are consistent with local authority, regional and national population estimates.

They are built from groups of 2001 Census Output Areas and are of consisitent size and fixed boundaries.

This table provides 2011 Census estimates that classify the usual resident population by national identity, for unitary authorities in Wales on census day (27 March 2011). National identity is a persons assessment of their own identity with respect to the country or countries with which they feel an affiliation. It is not dependent on legal nationality or ethnic group. The national identity classification used in this table is a 91 category classification.
