About the data used in this calculator
The analysis that this calculator is based on examined a large number of childhood characteristics to see which best predicted poverty in adulthood. Some characteristics which were investigated, such as the household financial situation in childhood, were not significant predictors of poverty once other factors such as educational attainment were accounted for, so are not included in the calculator.
The childhood characteristics that the analysis found to be predictors after accounting for other factors were;
- The person’s level of education
- The level of education of the individual’s parents at age 14
- The country of birth of both the individual and their parent
- The number of people in employment in the household when the individual was 14
Additionally, the analysis takes account of people’s gender and when they were born (based on their current age), so these are also included in the calculator.
