Death and birth rates for the United Kingdom, 2017 data
The information you requested is available in our Vital statistics in the UK: births, deaths and marriages publication. The tables provide data for the United Kingdom (UK) and its constituent countries. Figures for the UK are compiled by the Office for National Statistics by collating data for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
We do not hold 2018 data for Scotland and Northern Ireland yet. National Records of Scotland (NRS) is responsible for publishing birth and mortality statistics in Scotland. Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) is responsible for publishing the said statistics in Northern Ireland. Please follow the links below for the most recent data:
https://www.nisra.gov.uk/statistics/births-deaths-and-marriages
We are responsible for publishing mortality and births statistics for deaths and births registered in England and Wales. The most recent year for which these statistics are available is 2018.
Death rates for England and Wales, 2018 data
Death rates are derived from total deaths registered in England and Wales in the specific calendar year and corresponding mid-year population estimates. Figures for crude death rates, age-specific death rates or age-standardised mortality rates (ASMR) are available in table 1 and 2 of our Deaths registered in England and Wales dataset: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsregisteredinenglandandwalesseriesdrreferencetables
Alternatively, you may access the information you are interested in on death rates through NOMIS, our explorable dataset:
https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/construct/summary.asp?mode=construct&version=0&dataset=161
This dataset provides mortality statistics for England and Wales, broken down by calendar year of registration, age, sex, underlying cause of death and area of usual residence of the deceased.
For more information on the above death rates please see our User guide to mortality statistics.
Birth rates for England and Wales, 2018 data
The most commonly used rates in birth statistics are crude birth rate, general fertility rate (GFR), age-specific fertility rates (ASFRs) and total fertility rate (TFR). They are are calculated using the most up-to-date consistent mid-year estimates of the population, when the data are released.
Figures for those rates are available in the in table 1 and 2 of our births in England and Wales summary tables: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/datasets/birthsummarytables
We also produce five explorable datasets which provide more detailed birth statistics at different geography levels, including birth rates. Information on what data is available from each of these datasets is described in the 'explorable datasets' tab of our births in England and Wales summary tables. The explorable datasets can be accessed through NOMIS: https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/select/getdatasetbytheme.asp?theme=73
Detailed information on the above rates and how they are calculated is available in our User guide to birth statistics.
