We said
Thank you for query regarding brain cancer statistics, specifically Gliomas.
According to the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10), brain cancer can be defined as malignant neoplasm of brain (ICD-10 code: C71) for incidence statistics.
We publish the number of cancer tumours registered (incidence) in England in each calendar year, as part of the Cancer Statistics Registrations, England (Series MB1) release, which is produced in collaboration with Public Health England.
The latest available cancer incidence data is for 2016 and is available by 5-year age group in Table 1:
Table 10 provides the total number of brain cancer diagnoses per year since 1995.
Brain cancer incidence by morphology can be obtained by contacting the Cancer Analysis team at cancer.newport@ons.gov.uk. Bespoke tabulations of cancer data for England or sub-nationally can be requested (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs, where appropriate).
As the only information that can be provided is already available to you via this route, we consider that s.21(1) applies to this request and the information does not have to be supplied under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act. S.21(1) is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.
For information on causes of cancers please contact the National Cancer Registry Analysis Service within Public Health England at NCRASenquiries@phe.gov.uk.
