You asked

I would like to request the following information:

  1. The number of civil servants employed who are currently compressed hours workers on a four day week.

  2. The number of compressed hours workers on a four day week employed on 4 July 2024.

We said

Thank you for your query relating to compressed hours.

The Office for National Statistics produces estimates regarding people's work from the Annual Population Survey, a survey of people resident in UK households.

As part of this, we collect information on the number of people reporting that they work compressed hours, but not the specific number of working days that this arrangement relates to.  Therefore we do not hold information in scope of Q1 or 2.

People in the survey are classified to occupations in line with the Standard Occupational Classification 2020 (SOC2020). This includes occupations that align with certain Civil Service grades, but not does not identify civil servants specifically.

We do not produce any regular published outputs based on the number of people working compressed hours, whether by occupational information of otherwise. However, you could request a tailored analysis to be produced by contacting our social survey team (socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk).  There may be a charge for this service, depending on the time taken to develop the analysis and undertake quality and disclosure control processes.

The Cabinet Office conduct the Annual Civil Service Employment Survey (ACSES) which has a range of statistics relating to Civil Servants. However, this source does not include any information on people working compressed hours.
