You asked

Please provide me with copies of the following:

  • All data held by The Office Of National Statistics relating to death and injuries as a result of falls from windows and balconies over the last 3 years.

  • The exact number of falls from hospital, hotel and hostel balconies / windows, resulting in death over the last 3 years.

We said

All of the ONS mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

Death registrations for 2013 to 2018 where the underlying cause was a fall from a balcony or window are available via the following site: NOMIS. The cause of death you are interested in can be identified using ICD-10 code W13: 'Fall from, out of or through building or structure'. Unfortunately, it is not possible to identify whether the fall was from a hospital window specifically as this level of detail is not recorded.

We do not hold data regarding injury/incidence. NHS Digital may be better placed to help with this part of your query. They can be contacted at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.
