Please provide death figures from heart attacks and cancer in the months of March to 13 May for the last five years.

We are responsible for the publication of mortality statistics for England and Wales.

Unfortunately, we would be unable to provide you with deaths from heart attacks and cancer in the months of March to 13 May for the last five years. In order to fulfil this request, we would need use a high level of statistical skill and judgement in order to create a bespoke analysis or table. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

We can provide you with annual statistics from 2012 to 2018.

The following publication: Deaths registered in England and Wales: 2018 (previous versions are also available for 2017 to 2012) provides registered deaths by age, sex, selected underlying causes of death and the leading causes of death. This contains death rates and death registrations by area of residence and single year of age.

Our NOMIS webservice will also allow you to produce mortality statistics from 2013 to 2018. You can select by Geography, Sex, Age and ICD10 code.

In accordance with WHO ICD10 Classification of diseases Cancer is defined as ICD10 code LC02 and Heart attack (myocardial infarction) as ICD10 code I21.

"Deaths registered in England and Wales: 2019" will be published in July 2020, with 2020 data due to be published in July 2021.

For 2020 data, we can provide the following publication: Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales: deaths occurring in April 2020. This provides deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19) with Ischaemic heart disease and Cancer as pre-existing conditions. This data was published as part of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and is only available for March and April 2020. A further update for May will be published at the end of June.

We may be able to provide a monthly breakdown of deaths by ICD10 for March to May for 2013 to 2018 as you have requested, but this would need to be commissioned as bespoke analysis.

Such services would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs where appropriate.
