Deaths from epilepsy: 2014 to 2020

a) Total numbers of deaths registered in the UK as epilepsy related for every year from 2014 until the latest available year.

b) Total numbers of deaths registered in the UK as epilepsy-related in 2020 so far.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

a) Total numbers of deaths registered in the UK as epilepsy related for every year from 2014 until the latest available year

Deaths involving epilepsy for 2014 to 2019 can be obtained from our Nomis Webservice using codes defined by the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) G40 - G41.

Please see the attached excel spreadsheet, named 'NOMIS_Epilepsy2014-2019', which provides the requested information pulled from NOMIS.

b) Total numbers of deaths registered in the UK as epilepsy-related in 2020 so far

In order to provide epilepsy mortality data for 2020, we would need to create information. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

This information will be published as part of our Deaths Registered Series once the data has been finalised in the summer of 2021.
