You asked
Please would you be able to supply:
- Patient Deaths in North West with 'locality' of hospital.
- If possible I would like to see this across a 2018 to 2023 date range.
- During 2020-23 can the number of COVID-19-related deaths be added (only those recorded in hospital).
- Under each location it would be ideal (but I understand if this is not possible) for a breakdown of recorded deaths by hospital to help understand how the data groups hospitals - for example there are multiple hospitals in Manchester and I can't understand which are grouped under 'Greater Manchester' and which are grouped under just 'Manchester'.
We said
Thank you for your enquiry.
We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for deaths registered in England and Wales. This is driven by information collected from death certificates at death registration.
All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:
a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or
b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury
We publish statistics on the number of deaths by area of usual residence, sex and place of occurrence in this dataset (see Table 12). This data includes registered deaths in NHS hospitals. We have also previously published death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board in this dataset.
It is not possible to provide figures for individual hospitals without additional bespoke analysis as we do not normally analyse the data in this way. Additional breakdowns of the data are available to request via our bespoke services route.
Such services are subject to legal frameworks, resources and agreement of costs, in line with our charging policy. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further.
As this information is reasonably accessible via another route, even if only accessible on payment, Section 21(2)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
