You asked
Would it be possible to be supplied with the following information?
How many hoist deaths have occurred each year 2014-2021
The causes of these hoist deaths
The types of equipment used we are very interested to see if there has been a decrease in the incidents of deaths using hygiene/toileting slings.
We said
Thank you for your enquiry deaths involving hoist equipment.
We produce statistics for deaths which occur in England and Wales, using the information provided during the registration of a death. Cause of death is coded using version 10 of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Whilst there are a number of ICD-10 codes related to falls, there is no specific code for deaths which occur due to hoist equipment. The cause of death is usually more specific to the circumstances of the accident rather than where it occurred.
Unfortunately, we do not hold information on the type of equipment involved in these deaths, as this is not information that is recorded on the death certificate.
The Health and Safety Executive may be better placed to answer your enquiry. Please contact your local HSE office for further information.
You may be interested to know that there are three potential ICD-10 codes which may cover deaths of this nature in the data that we hold:
W24 Contact with lifting equipment and transmissions devices, not elsewhere classified
W04 - Fall whilst being carried or supported by another person
W19 - Unspecified Falls
Our NOMIS Webservice will provide deaths involving the above ICD-10 codes for England and Wales from 2013 - 2020. Further disaggregation is available on NOMIS by age and sex.

.xls .csvIf this does not meet your needs, we may be able to create a custom output on the three ICD-10 codes listed above. However, as confirmed this would not be specific for Hoist deaths as unfortunately, we do not hold that precise information. Information on deaths by specific ICD-10 code with further disaggregation, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
Please note, 2021 data is not yet available for this service, as it is still in provisional format and subject to change.
