I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Specifically, I would like to obtain data on driving penalties issued for middle lane hogging since the law was enacted in 2013. The details I am requesting are as follows:

  1. The total number of penalties issued for middle lane hogging each year from 2013 to May 2024.

  2. Detailed information on where these penalties were issued, including the specific roads and counties.

  3. The total amount of fines imposed as a result of these penalties, broken down by year and location if possible. (Please include fines issued, along with the fines successfully paid)

  4. Details on the cars given penalties for middle lane hogging, if the data is available

Thank you for your request.

Unfortunately, we do not hold the data you are requesting.  This information may be available from the Department for Transport (DfT).

DfT are contactable by e-mail: roadacc.stats@dft.gov.uk and they may be able to provide you with more information.

The Home Office also holds some data about driving offences, broken down by Police Force Areas and Community Safety Partnerships which might be of help. These can be found in the Police recorded crime and outcomes open data tables. They are also contactable by e-mail on  CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk and may be able to help you further with your request.

You may find our police recorded crime data, published as part of our Crime in England and Wales quarterly bulletins useful, this provides a breakdown of driving offences under the category of 'Death or serious injury - unlawful driving' in Appendix Table A4.

Unfortunately, we do not hold any further breakdown or information on these offences.
