You asked
I would like to request the following data:
A dataset containing the geographic boundaries (polygons) for all MSOA codes in England, Scotland, and Wales in GeoJSON or Shapefile format AND a spreadsheet format.
We said
Thank you for your request.
The Open Geography portal provides versions of the Middle layer Super Output Area (MSOA) boundaries. Two versions of the England and Wales 2021 MSOA boundaries are:
Generalised Clipped Boundaries: These boundaries are generalised to 20 meters.
Super Generalised Clipped Boundaries: These boundaries are generalised to 200 meters.
The GeoJSON files for these boundaries can be downloaded from Open Geography Portal on the ONS website:
To view Generalised Clipped Boundaries (BGC) for all the boundaries, please visit the Open Geography portal. Click “I want to use this”, then select “View API Resources”, and then ‘View’ next to the GeoJSON option.
To view Super Generalised Clipped Boundaries (BSC) for all the boundaries, please also visit the Open Geography portalenter link description here. Click “I want to use this”, then select “View API Resources”, and then ‘View’ next to the GeoJSON option.
Additionally, the Excel spreadsheet for MSOA December 2021 Boundaries can be downloaded from the ONS Open Geography Portal.
Please note that the Office for National Statistics (ONS) does not supply the Scottish Intermediate Zones (2022). However, these can be accessed on The Scottish Government’s website.
We have also created a names and codes file for the Scottish Intermediate Zones (2022), which can be found in the associated download.
If you require further assistance, particularly with using the Geography portal, please contact ONS.Geography@ons.gov.uk.
