FOI Ref: FOI/2021/3100
You asked
My FOI request relates to mortality in heart failure, is there a seperate IDC code for heart failure and non-ischaemic heart failure mortality?
Is heart failure included as a sub-set of mortality in IHD in statistical data?
My query relates to England and Wales populations.
We said
Thank you for your enquiry requesting clarification of ICD-10 codes.
Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.
The following ICD-10 codes are applicable for deaths involving the cardiovascular system. These ICD-10 codes sit with the Diseases of the Circulatory system section.
I20 - I25: Ischaemic Heart Disease.
I26 - I28: Pulmonary Heart disease and diseases of pulmonary circulation.
I32 - I52: Other forms of heart disease, including I50 Congestive heart failure. A breakdown of these codes is available in the ICD-10 coding manual.
The information you have requested part of our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice.
