Thank you for your enquiries raised under Freedom of Information.

We carry out the census for England and Wales. You will therefore need to contact the National Records of Scotland  (NRS) to obtain data for Scottish language mapping in Scotland. Likewise with regard to language mapping for Northern Ireland you will need to contact the Northern Ireland Research and Statistics Agency (NISRA). They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

You may find this report 2011 Census: Detailed analysis - English language proficiency in England and Wales useful for your research. 2011 Census data for language proficiency is also available through our Nomis website.  Please see the two attached datasets that we have extracted through Nomis to demonstrate the type of data that is available, named 'NOMIS_Proficiency_in_English_by_age.xlsx' and 'NOMIS_Welsh_Language_Skills.xlsx'. This data is available for other levels of geography for both England and Wales.

Please contact Census Customer Services directly at Census.CustomerServices@ons.gov.uk if you would like help with accessing the data through this channel. A member of that team will be able to help you navigate around the site to find the most appropriate data.
