Thank you for your Freedom of Information requesting the number of secondary schools in England along with their school names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, location addresses and head teacher names.
The Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) holds all businesses registered for VAT and/or PAYE. Aggregated information from the IDBR can be viewed on NOMIS, which allows users to break down the IDBR data by various means. These data can be found under the UK Business Counts option. The following counts for England have been extracted using the local unit information. Local units are the individual sites attached to a business/organisation. This option has been chosen because very often schools are listed as sites of a local authority.
The latest data available are from March 2023. The following data have been created using Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) 85310: General secondary education and SIC 85320: Technical and vocational secondary education.
- SIC 85310 - number of local units = 4,525
- SIC 85320 - number of local units = 2,870
Please note the count of units has been rounded.
We are unable to help with the information relating to individual records. We do not hold all of this information but, where we do, we are not able to disclose it. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it a criminal offence to disclose information held by our organisation for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individuals and individual businesses can be identified, Section 44(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
The Department for Education (DfE) may be able to assist with this request further. They will have more comprehensive data and are not bound by the same laws that we are. They can be contacted via this contact form.
If you need help with NOMIS or have further questions, please contact idbrdas@ons.gov.uk.
