You asked
Please supply the data for number and age of individuals having cardiac arrests in 2021 and for the past 10 years.
We said
Thank you for your enquiry.
All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes, an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as:
a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or
b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury
The following ICD-10 code attributable for deaths due to cardiac arrest is I46.
Cardiac arrest deaths 2011 - 2012
Prior to 2013, you can find mortality breakdowns by cause in the Deaths registered in England and Wales – 21st century mortality. This includes annual data on the number of deaths registered in England and Wales by age group, sex, year and underlying cause of death, as defined using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision.
You will need to select the ICD-10 cell in column A2 and filter on the codes that fall under I46. This will give you the counts of death for cardiac arrest.
If this does not meet your needs, we may be able to create a bespoke request. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
