Thank you for your Freedom of Information request regarding specific demographics associated with England and Wales.

We publish annual mid-year population estimates. The latest available data are for mid-2019, which can be accessed via the following link: Estimate of the population for the UK, England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Within this link, please open the first Excel spreadsheet titled 'Mid-2019: April 2020 local authority district codes'. Then, select the table 'MYE2-Persons'.

This provides data for persons by single year of age and sex for local authorities in the UK.  Using these data, you can calculate the percentage of people and young adults that you require.

Calculation method and example - England:

For example, row 9 provides data for England.

The population aged over 65 is 9,777,972.

The total population for England is 56,286,961.

Divide the population aged over 65 value (9,777,972) by the total population of England value (56,286,961) to provide the percentage (17.4%).

Therefore, 17.4% of the population of England is aged over 65.
