You asked

I would like to obtain information regarding Polish nationals who were victims of homicides in the UK for the years 2011-2019 and if possible, broken down by sex. I would also like data relating to the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Following a search of our records, I can confirm that we do not currently hold the precise information you have requested.

We are responsible for publishing mortality statistics for deaths registered in England and Wales, using the information supplied on the death certificate. The most recent year for which mortality statistics are available is 2017.

However, we may be able to produce statistics on homicide where the deceased place of birth was Poland. Please note that birthplace and nationality are two different variables - we have a record of place of birth but not of nationality. We do not have detailed information relating to the circumstances of the death, within the death registration records.

Any such analysis would be outside of the Freedom of Information regime and would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs where appropriate. If this is something you would be interested in, please contact vsob@ons.gov.uk so that we may discuss your enquiry further. For more information about the services we offer please visit our website.

Alternatively, if you meet the ONS Researcher Accreditation criteria you may access this data from the Secure Research Service (SRS). For further information please follow the link below to the ONS website: http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/about-ons/business-transparency/freedom-of-information/what-can-i-request/virtual-microdata-laboratory--vml-/index.html

To obtain access to the data please contact the SRS team at research.support@ons.gov.uk or by telephone: 01329 447871.

Please be aware that all of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) https://icd.who.int/browse10/2014/en. From all of these causes, an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

If you are able to access the data through SRS, you will need to use the following ICD10 codes for homicide deaths:

  1. X85-Y09

  2. U50.9

  3. Y87.1

Data for Scotland is available from National Records of Scotland; https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/statistics/statistics-by-theme/vital-events/deaths,

The most recent crime data on homicide can be found in Homicide in England and Wales: year ending March 2018. This contains analyses of homicide offences held within the Home Office Homicide Index. The Home Office Homicide Index contains record level detail about homicides recorded in England and Wales since 1977. Information prior to 1977 is held as paper records. In contrast to the aggregated recorded crime return, the Homicide Index is continually being updated with revised information from the police as investigations continue and as cases are heard by the courts, and is therefore viewed as a better source of data. Homicide Index data are based on the year when the offence was first recorded, not when the offence took place or when the case was heard in court. While in the vast majority of cases the offence will be recorded in the same year as it took place, this is not always the case.

Table 7 shows the relationship of victim to the principal suspect. This includes the relationships of son or daughter, parent, and partner or ex-partner for the years ending March 2008 to year ending March 2018. Data for the year ending March 2018 are the latest data available. We are unable to provide figures specifically for Polish nationals.

While we do publish some information from the Homicide Index, the actual data are collated and owned by the Home Office. It may be possible that they can help you further. They can be contacted by email: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.
