Thank you for your Freedom of Information request regarding population information for North Yorkshire, Richmondshire and Catterick.

Please note that whilst North Yorkshire and Richmondshire are local authorities, Catterick is not, therefore no data will be available specifically for this area, although for certain variables data can be provided by specific postcode.

With regard to your specific criteria, please see below:-

  1. Average age of the population - our latest population estimates by age at the local authority level can be found in our mid-year Estimates of the Population for the UK, England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The NOMIS website has local area profiles, where you can type in ‘Richmondshire’ for example and it will give you age categories with mean and median ages, along with many other data, however this is using 2011 Census data.

  2. Ethnicity - the latest National Statistics by ethnic group are from the 2011 Census, which may be accessed via the NOMIS website. This allows users to create their own data tables using different variables so local authority may be used in this instance. However these are not the latest data available, ad hoc population denominators by ethnic group for later years are available however these are not classed as National Statistics.

  3. Equality – aside from data from the 2011 Census on the NOMIS website, the recent Equalities Data Audit provides a database of all the surveys relating to protected characteristics by geographic granularity, if you require an ad hoc please email equalities@ons.gov.uk. Please be aware that this may be a chargeable service.

  4. Employment – the NOMIS website has labour market profile information from the 2011 Census by local authority.

  5. Religion – 2011 Census data for religion can be found on the NOMIS website. Also, the Annual Population Survey asks participants about religion, so there may be more up to date information from this; please contact socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk to ask for further information in this regard.

  6. Demographics – This includes the aforementioned criteria along with other variables such as sex.

  • The mid-2017 estimates hold data on sex.

  • Table 3 of the Live Births 2017 dataset contains information on live births, total fertility rates and number of stillbirths by local authority.

  • Table 3 of the Death Registrations summary tables for 2017 include information regarding the number of deaths, standardised mortality rate and age-standardised mortality rate of each local authority.

  • Our Local Area Migration Indicators Suite for 2017 contains a wealth of information by local authority on indicators of migration, such as the non-British and non-UK born populations, the number of internal and internal migrants and births to non-UK born mothers.

When accessing any of our files please read the 'notes, terms and conditions' contained within them.
