You asked

I was wondering if you could release any data you hold on the instances of racially motivated crime in the UK in 2018 so far and break it down by region please?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry relating to the number of racially motivated crimes in the UK in 2018.

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide you with the data you requested. Our data relate to England and Wales only. Crime statistics for Scotland are published by the Scottish Government, police recorded crime data for Northern Ireland are published by the PSNI and the Department of Justice (Northern Ireland).

One of our primary sources of data for crime statistics is the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). The CSEW is a face-to-face victimisation survey of people resident in households in England and Wales.

In the survey, respondents who have experienced a crime are asked ‘Do you think the incident was racially motivated?’. However, the sample size for a single year of the CSEW is not large enough to produce robust estimates for this question. Therefore, we are not able to provide you with the number of racially motivated crimes in England and Wales.

Police recorded crime is collected and managed by the Home Office. We are unable to provide a breakdown of hate crime by region as we do not hold this information. The Home Office publish hate crime statistics here. The ‘Hate crime, England and Wales, 2017 to 2018’ publication will be released on the 16 October 2018.

The Home Office are contactable by e-mail at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk and may be able to help you further with your request.
