I was wondering what statistics are held with regards to racially motivated hate crimes in schools and universities during the pandemic.

Thank you for your email.

The Home Office publishes annual statistics on hate crimes and racist incidents in England and Wales recorded by the police. The latest release is for the year 2019/2020; thus covering some of the COVID-19 pandemic period. Appendix Table 6 gives the number of racially or religiously aggravated offences recorded by the police, by month, from January 2019 to March 2020.

The Home Office does not publish data on the specific locations of racially motivated hate crimes (i.e., schools and universities). That said, Appendix Table 1 does give the number of race hate crimes within each police force area of England and Wales for 2019/2020.

Further to this, Appendix Table 11 publishes data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales and shows the percentage of adults (aged 16 and over) who were victims of hate crimes between 2017/18 to 2019/20.  Although this table does not look specifically at racially motivated hate crimes, it does disaggregate the data by personal characteristics such as occupation (including "Full-time students") and employment status (including "Student").

For more information on hate crime statistics recorded by the police, you can contact Home Office directly at: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk. They will also be able to provide you information on when the next release will be.
