Thank you for your request regarding Registered Nurses in sexual health services.

The Office for National Statistics classifies occupations in line with the Standard Occupational Classification 2010 (SOC2010) and industries in line with the Standard Industrial Classification 2007 (SIC 07).

Under SOC2010, all nurses are classified in occupation 2231 – Nurses. This occupation category includes nurses, district nurses, health visitors, mental health practitioners, staff nurses, student nurses, psychiatric nurses etc.

Under SIC 07, the industry classification is not structured in a way that would identify sexual health services within a specific category. Instead there is the more general health classification of hospital activities, reflecting the activity of the institution.

The only source that we use to produce regular results at the most detailed level of occupation and industry combined is the Census. At the 2011 Census there were around 305,000 nurses working in hospital activities. However, given the nature of the classifications, it is unlikely that a statistic relating to the number of nurses working in hospital activities will be helpful to you.

It might be possible to get a more specific estimate relating to your query from either the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) or the National Health Service (NHS). They can be contacted at DHSC Contact Form and enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk respectively.
