You asked
Under the Freedom of Information Act can you let me have some figures of road accidents fatalities in Wales on the roads where it once was 30mph and is now 20mph since the introduction of the 20mph speed limit rollout. Figures from September 2024 to March 2024 against September 2023 to March 2024.
We said
Thank you for your enquiry.
Deaths due to road traffic accidents are routinely referred to a coroner for investigation therefore are subject to registration delays.
The median registration delay for road traffic accidents registered in 2021 was 321 days. Our publication on the Impact of Registrations Delays provides further information.
The coroner determines the cause of death following an inquest, based on all the available evidence. It is unusual for wider contextual factors such as the speed limit of a road to be recorded on the death certificate, therefore we do not hold that information.
However, in case it is of interest, for the period 17 September 2022, to 31 March 2023, there were 29 deaths from road accidents occurring in Wales. Due to the delay in registrations, we are still in the data collection phases for 2023 to 2024. Because of this, analysis has not yet started, and we do not hold a figure for that reporting period.
Welsh Government release figures on road accidents and fatalities. The next publication for accidents occurring in 2023 is due to be released on 26 June 2024. If you have any queries on this data, please contact Welsh Government directly.
