You asked

Could you please provide me with the figures/percentage of people living in rural communities/neighbourhoods in Arun district?

We said

Thank you for your freedom of information request.

The most up to date figures of people living in rural communities/neighbourhoods in Arun district are from the 2011 Census.

Please see the associated download named 'Arun_local_authority_K20101EW'. This provides usual resident population - details the residents of Arun local authority and whether they are resident in an urban or rural area. This table has been extracted from Nomis. Nomis is a service run on behalf of the ONS by the university of Durham.

Unfortunately, because the updated urban/rural classification is not yet complete, we don't hold an equivalent dataset from Census 2021.

The classification allows summary outputs to be produced by rural-urban type at local authority, region and country level.

The outputs are based on a rural-urban classification of output areas. The 2011 classification is a revised version of the one created after the 2001 Census with additional detail in the urban domain.

Output areas are treated as urban if they were allocated to a 2011 built-up area with a population of 10,000 or more people. The urban domain is sub-divided into three broad morphological types based on the predominant settlement component. As with the previous version of the classification, the remaining rural output areas are grouped into three broad morphological types based on the predominant settlement component.

The classification also categorises output areas based on context - i.e. whether the wider surrounding area of a given output area is sparsely populated or less sparsely populated.

We don't have a definite release date for the update to the 2011 classification yet, although we are aiming for a release in Summer 2024.

However, as release of the standard Census 2021 outputs is now complete an equivalent dataset may not be readily available in the ready-made multivariate datasets or using the create a custom dataset tool. You may be able to commission a similar dataset to your own specifications, once the new classification is available.

On receipt of your completed order form, you will be added to the waiting list. Please note that any table commissioned will have to pass our strict statistical disclosure control process to ensure there is no risk of disclosure of personal information in the table.
