Thank you for your enquiry into the number and characteristics of school teachers in independent schools in England.

We publish some information regarding the characteristics of school teachers, from the Annual Population Survey (APS). However this source does not provide a separate split for teachers in independent schools. Individuals on APS are classified to occupations based on their responses at interview using the Standard Occupational Classification 2010 (SOC2010). This differentiates between teachers in higher education, further education, secondary education, primary education and special needs education. However, it does not distinguish between the funding or governance arrangements of the education establishment.

The APS results that we publish would tell you how many people are employed in each of these teaching occupations split by sex and region of England, or country of the UK. This information is available from our Nomis website at:

https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/construct/summary.asp?mode=construct&version=0&dataset=168

Additionally, the APS holds information on the age and highest level of qualification. If you would like a specific analysis produced for the age and qualification breakdowns of teachers you can request data from Social Surveys socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk. However, it should be remembered that this analysis would not provide separate information on teachers at independent schools.

As an alternative, you may wish to contact the Department for Education who hold much more detailed information specifically relating to teachers.
