You asked
Please provide the following information:
How many Shia Muslims live in the UK (as of 2020)?
Which cities do these Shia Muslims live in?
We said
Thank you for your request asking how many Shia Muslims live in the UK, and the cities in which they live.
While we can estimate overall numbers of Muslims living in Great Britain, our data does not specify the branch (such as Shia) to which they belong.
Unfortunately, we also cannot give data at city level. The most detailed level of breakdown may be by local authority (LA), but this may not be particularly robust, due to small samples for some LAs.
Unfortunately, we are also unable to provide data for whole of the UK, since the religion question is asked differently to residents of Northern Ireland, where Muslims are aggregated within "other religion".
In order to provide the requested analysis within the above limits, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Information about the number of Muslims can be obtained from the customer services team of ONS Social Services division. This team provides an ad hoc analysis service, including tabulations of Labour force (LFS) and Annual Population Survey (APS) data, both of which contain question variables relating to religion. This service is subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate.
Details of the variables included in these datasets can be viewed in the LFS User Guide.
If you would like to enquire about our service then please contact socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk.
If you are able to do your own cross-tabulations, anonymised LFS or APS datasets can be purchased from the UK Data Service. Advice for commercial users and details on costs and how to download the data can be found on their website.
Please do not hesitate to contact us directly on pop.info@ons.gov.uk if you require anything further.
