UK statistics on number of strokes per year within age groups of 5-18

You asked

Can you please supply me with the following details?

A breakdown of the number of strokes per year within the age groups of 5-18 yr olds within the United Kingdom.

I would like this broken down into different charts

• total amount of fatalities due to stroke

• total amount of stroke victims

This can be listed as per age group.

I would also like to know the last 5-year total amount of stroke victims within the age groups mentioned above.

We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. We do not hold the requested data for the whole of the UK.

Numbers of those suffering from strokes

We do not hold information on those who have suffered with stroke. NHS Digital may be better placed to assist with this enquiry. They can be contacted by email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.

Deaths due to or involving stroke 2016 - 2020

All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) the coded mortality data available up to end of December 2020 is coded to version 2014 of the ICD10 framework. Stroke is coded under the ICD-10 code 'I64'.

We hold the following analysis from 2011 - 2020 Deaths Registered in England and Wales which will show leading causes of death by age for 2016 to 2020. Table 9a shows the leading causes of death for 5-year age groups by sex in England and Wales.

Annual mortality data by cause and 5 year age group from 2013-2020 is available as part of our explorable dataset on our NOMIS webservice. This explorable dataset can be used to search for deaths by ICD codes I64.

Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).

• Select dates - 2013 to 2020 or tick all.
• Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands.
• Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
• Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
• Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available). I64
• Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

However, we do not hold analysis of deaths due to or involving a stroke (ICD-10 I64) by your requested age group of 5 to 18 year old.

If the Deaths Registered Series or NOMIS extract does not meet your needs, we may be able to produce this for you as a bespoke request. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).

2021 data

ONS do not hold analysis for deaths registered in England and Wales by cause in 2021. Finalised mortality data for 2021 will be published in July 2022.
