You asked

Please could you provide a dataset containing the total number of haemorrhagic stroke deaths in the UK for each year for the last ten years. If it is possible, could this be broken down to show the number of deaths by week?

We said

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore, we do not hold the requested information for the whole of the UK.

Regarding data for England and Wales, the annual number of deaths registered due to haemorrhagic stroke can be accessed on the NOMIS webservice.

Please see the following instructions for using this service:

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).

  • Select Age – All ages or 5-year age bands.

  • Select Gender – Total or Male/Female

  • Select rates – All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.

  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available).  We suggest codes:

  • I60 – Subarachnoid haemorrhage

  • I61 – Intracerebral haemorrhage

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

NOMIS does not provide information on a weekly basis. This data would need to be produced via our bespoke services. Information on deaths due to haemorrhagic stroke by week of registration, deaths registered in England and Wales, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data are available to order. Please note these services are subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs in line with our charging policy.
