Understanding Data and Basic Statistics: 21 to 22 May 2018

The purpose of this practical two day workshop is to present an overview of manipulations of data that are often required prior to statistical analysis. Topics will include dealing with outliers, combining data from different sources, calculating annual average growth rates, weighting and smoothing data and constructing indexes.  It will also cover basic statistical methods used in describing data such as measures of central tendency and dispersion, correlation and the use of dummy variables in regression analysis.

This course is part of a series that has been created and endorsed by Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Royal Economic Society (RES). The series aims to improve quality and understanding in various economic statistics topics.

Inequality and Poverty Analysis

This two-day course provided an introduction to the ways in which analysts measure inequality and poverty, addressing conceptual issues and practical matters including data.   There was also be hands-on sessions in the computer lab to gain experience of analysis of real world data.

Prices Training Course  11th – 12th February 2018 Central London

This two-day course explored the economic and statistical theory behind the construction of price indices. The main part of the course looked at the price data used to construct the indices, how it is combined in different indices and to explained the differences between the different inflation measures.

This event was organised jointly by Office for National Statistics (ONS), the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and the Royal Economic Society (RES). Presenters Professor Diane Coyle (University of Manchester, ONS Fellow), Professor Jonathan Haskel (Imperial College, London) and discussant Peter Van de Ven (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), covered the difficulties of measuring services sector activity and intangible assets.
