Further to the statement on the classification review of universities in the UK made on 31 January 2017, the review has been paused as a result of the announcement of the Review of post-18 education and funding, which raises the possibility that the cap for tuition fees may be altered. As this could affect the classification status of individual universities, the review will recommence when there is more certainty in this area. The outcome of the review will be that an individual university will either be deemed to be in the private non-financial corporations (S.11002) sector, or will remain classified in the non-profit institutions serving households (S.15) sector.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding while ONS awaits the outcome of this review. If you have any further queries, please get in touch at econstats.classifications@ons.gov.uk.
