The Office for National Statistics (ONS) welcomes the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) inaugural spotlight on quality report of the Producer Price Indices (PPI).
The report notes the excellent progress made recently in bringing PPI in line with methodological best practice through the introduction of annual chain linking, but also highlights areas that need to be improved.
We are already taking steps to address the requirements of the report. The ONS has a wider strategy to move the production of statistics away from the Ingres relational database, and to migrate business surveys from paper-based collection to electronic collection. In the coming months, we will update users on our plans to address the issues raised in this report.
The report also highlights our good engagement with users of PPI, but in line with its findings we will be improving supporting information that accompany these data.
The PPI errors that were identified in late 2022 have also led to improvements in the way we quality assure our statistics, and we will continue to build on the progress made to ensure the PPI remains a robust measure of business inflation.
