Summary of request
Table 1 details the number of deaths from suicide among those classified as being a full-time student at the time of death, for deaths registered in England and Wales between 2001 and 2016. The figures are split by sex, and usual place of residence.
When interpreting these data, it is important to bear in mind the following:
The classification of student is based on the information provided by the informant at the time of death registration, and cannot be used to distinguish the type of student (e.g. university, those in higher education college).
The numbers detailed in this data set cannot be used to ascertain the risk of suicide among students. Year-to-year differences in numbers of deaths may merely reflect change in the population of students across time as opposed to change in the risk of suicide. ONS is currently undertaking work to develop a robust method for understanding the risk of suicide among certain kinds of students.
