Underlying and contributory causes of death were defined using the International Classification of Diseases Tenth revision (ICD-10) codes:

• J10 'Influenza due to other identified influenza virus'

• J11 'Influenza, virus not identified'

Deaths are included where the deceased was a usual resident of England. Deaths occurring in flu seasons (1 September to 31 August) year ending 2013 to year ending 2017.
