The table details the number of deaths from suicide among those aged 18 years and over, classified as being a full-time student at the time of death, for deaths registered in England and Wales between 2010 and 2019. The figures are split by sex. Students are defined by the National Socio-Economic Class (NS-SEC) classification.
When interpreting these data, it is important to bear in mind the following: The classification of student is based on the information provided by the informant at the time of death registration, and cannot be used to distinguish the type of student (for example, university, those in higher education college).
The numbers detailed in this data set cannot be used to ascertain the risk of suicide among students. Year-to-year differences in numbers of deaths may merely reflect change in the population of students across time as opposed to change in the risk of suicide. The ONS is currently undertaking work to develop a robust method for understanding the risk of suicide among certain kinds of students.
