Summary of request
This table provides Census estimates from 1981 to 2021 (time series) that classify all usual residents by sex.
Geographical level: National to local authority.
Source: 2021 Census (21 March 2021)
For 2021, all counts have been rounded to the nearest 100.
The broad picture of population change can be followed from census to census, but as each census has evolved to reflect and keep up with changes in society, direct comparison does not necessarily provide a good source of information about detailed change over time. Changes in the questions asked, in the categories used to present results, and in geographical boundaries, mean that each census primarily provides a 'cross sectional' picture of the country at the time.
- In 1981, the figures are counts of people usually resident in households where someone was present on census night.
- In 1991, the tables also include estimates of residents in wholly absent households on census night.
- From 2001, the tables include estimates of everyone who was not counted in the census, including those missed within households.
Statistical disclosure controls have been applied to data at lower geographies which may result in differences in the aggregated data totals across tables.
