An insight into the characteristics of national parks in England and Wales, and looking at how they have changed over the past decade. Using a variety of census topics, we compare the individual national parks and make comparisons with England and Wales as a whole. The 2011 Census show that national parks throughout England and Wales cover 10.8% of the land area, but currently contain just 0.7% of the total population.

This release provides key 2011 Census estimates that describe the usual resident population (as at March 2011) of national parks in England and Wales. The 35 Key Statistics tables included provide census estimates for the populations within the exact boundaries of the 13 national parks in England and Wales.
