Important notes and usage information

Death statistics are compiled from information supplied when deaths are certified and registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement.

Figures represent the number of deaths registered in the calendar year.

Figures represent deaths which occurred in England and Wales, these include the deaths of individuals whose usual residence was outside England and Wales.

Prior to the 2017 data year the persons standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) in these tables have been incorrectly calculated. The impact of this change is minimal and does not affect the male and female SMRs. The calculation has been corrected for the 2017 data year onwards. Based on 2017 data, the SMRs for 16.7% of areas changed by 1 while other areas did not change.

Our User guide to mortality statistics provides information on data quality, legislation and procedures relating to deaths.
